Saying Goodbye to Music Biz

Right before Thanksgiving break, Charlie called to tell me that Music Biz would be going out of business. From the sounds of it, the company that owns the chain and the small record label that produces cheap country b-sides had a bit of a vendetta with the Alton store, thus the untimely closing of the city's remaining music haven (Slacker's doesn't count).

Since Music Biz was such a big part of my life for so long, it's hard to see it go. It was one of those jobs that I'll tell my kids about, and probably a job that they'll never have the pleasure of experiencing. The people at the indie stores like Music Biz end up being like a second family, and with the exception of Krannert (and even then, just barely) I've never actually felt happy to go to work every day.

Without A Doubt The Coolest Thing Ever To Happen. Ever.

The new Apple iPhone was unveiled today. You can bet your ass I'll be trying to get my hands on this. 8 GB iPod, 2.0 megapixel camera, widescreen video, touchscreen menus, and the ability to listen to whichever voicemail messages you want to, skipping the ones you don't. This passes the discovery of fire as the best thing that has ever happened to mankind.

The Year That Was- The Best of 2006

As the second day of 2007 comes to a close, it occurs to me that I never did finish my year in review. So, as I sit in the kitchen listening to the end of the M*A*S*H* series finale (an episode that never ceases to completely amaze me), I'll do my best to do 2006, the year that was both incredible and simple, the justice it so very much deserves.

The Year That Was- The Worst of 2006

As 2006 comes to a close, it occurs to me that many things- both good and bad- happened to us this year. In order to make sense of it all, I've come up with a ranking of the best and worst of 2006. In true "Bad news first, good news last" tradition, I'll begin with the bad and with those who have passed on, and list the happier parts tomorrow.

Being a bastard is bipartisan

You know, if I needed to hide $90,000 pretty quickly, I can't say that my first instinct would be the freezer.

The money was divided among various frozen food containers, according to the heavily redacted affidavit.

Agents told a judge the money was part of a $100,000 payment that had been delivered by an informant in the bribery probe, which already has led to guilty pleas by a Kentucky businessman and a former Jefferson aide.

Cute.

One man who should never be booed

During a speech at the markedly liberal "New School" (a college, supposedly), Senator John McCain was booed. Some students and faculty went as far as to stand up and turn their backs.

What I Really Want for My Birthday

After rummaging through the Illini Union Bookstore today to get prices on Dreamweaver MX or Studio MX, only to find that they A) had neither; and B) were selling old software for cheap. So, I mosied on over to Adobe's website and found out that the MX series is dated by about two years and has been replaced by the 8 series. When I saw the prices, I quite nearly shat. $999 for Studio 8! Ah, but there was a silver lining to this cloud...

Welcome to O'Guinnicus.com 5.0

I've finally found a blogging software that I'm happy with. Today has brought two big changes to O'Guinnicus.com: the PHPBB system that can be found here and this blog. Many thanks go out to Shaun Young, my server guru, Scott Troyan, co-founder of TROYAN-O'GUINNSTOCKAPALOOZAFESTATHON 2006, and Mike Halbrook, the man who bought the domain for me and helped me with the final few code issues. I really cannot overstate the importance of the roles that these guys play. Thanks also to Greg Jackson for some friendly competition and ideas.
